Ask ten people whether you need a licence to drive a forklift in Kerala and you will get ten different answers. The confusion is fair, because the honest answer is: it depends entirely on where the forklift is driven.
Do you need a driving licence for a forklift?
There are two situations, and two different sets of rules govern them.
- Inside a factory, warehouse, port or private yard. The machine never touches a public road, so this is workplace safety territory, not the RTO’s. What your employer needs is proof you are trained and competent on the machine.
- On a public road. The moment it moves on a public road it is a motor vehicle, and you need the appropriate licence from your RTO for that class.
That is why some people are told “you don’t need a licence” and others are told the opposite. Both are right — about different situations.
Almost every forklift job in Kerala is inside a warehouse, port or factory. What gets you hired there is a recognised training certificate and demonstrated competence, not an RTO licence.
What employers actually ask for
From the recruiters who hire our operators, the list is short and consistent:
- Hands-on training on a real forklift, not a classroom-only certificate
- A training certificate from a recognised institute
- Evidence you can run the machine they actually operate — counterbalance, reach truck, or both
- For Gulf roles, a trade test pass, which is a practical assessment on the machine
That last one matters more than people expect. Gulf employers rarely hire on paperwork alone. They want to watch you operate, and that is where candidates who trained on rented, time-rationed machines come unstuck.
Who can train
Forklift is the most accessible way into heavy equipment work. No engineering background. No prior heavy-vehicle licence. Basic literacy is enough for the safety material. It is also genuinely open to women, and several of our forklift trainees every month are women.
Counterbalance or reach truck?
These are different machines, and employers ask for them by name.
- Counterbalance — the classic forklift. Loading, unloading, yard and general warehouse work.
- Reach truck — built for narrow aisles and high racking. Standard in modern distribution centres.

Why seat time decides everything
A2Z owns its machines. Centres that rent have to ration practice, because the meter is running. We don’t, so you practise until the machine stops being intimidating — which, for a skill that is pure muscle memory, is the whole game.

What it pays, honestly
We deliberately don’t publish salary figures. They swing hard by employer, location and shift, and a number posted today misleads within a year. The shape of it: Gulf roles typically pay a multiple of comparable domestic roles, and reach-truck operators are consistently scarcer than counterbalance-only ones.
Forklift is also a first rung, not a ceiling. Plenty of our operators add crane or trailer certification later, because each extra category widens the jobs open to them. Our co-founder Radhamani Amma holds over 11 categories — same principle, taken further than most.

Can I get a forklift licence without a driving licence?
For work inside warehouses, factories and ports — where most forklift jobs are — you do not need an RTO driving licence. You need documented training and demonstrated competence. If the role involves public roads, ask your RTO which licence class applies.
How long does forklift training take?
